Welcome to AUTHOR ANONYMOUS! (Kind of ‘punny’)
The AA Preamble
“AUTHORS ANONYMOUS is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from promotional endeavours. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop the negative thinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay writing and help other writers to achieve sales.”
Sometimes it takes hitting the wall before we seek recovery. By following these steps, in all our affairs, there’s hope whether we’re still actively writing or not.
Twelve Steps for Authors:
#1 – We admitted we were powerless over consumers—that our marketing endeavours had become unmanageable.
No matter how much I market, there are no guarantees for the exact number of sales.
*Yet – The more I exposure myself and my books, the greater chance of success and increase book sales.
#2 – Came to believe that we need help from our fellow writers—so as a team, our marketing plan could restore us to sanity.
Going solo, while marketing on the Internet, exhausts all my energy.
*Yet – Reaching out to other experts in my field or my targeted audience and linking my site, giving guest posts and accepting interviews will speed the spread of my author platform.
#3 – Made a decision to turn the outcome of our expectations to the published posts of our blog as we understood it.
Setting myself up for unrealistic expectations leads to only terrible results and even a sense of failure.
*Yet – Planning is okay. So I’ll toss out my fears and post my article…be ready to write, write, and write some more.
#4 – Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of the Internet resources.
Decide on my area of expertise and hone in on the experts.
*Yet – I’ve given myself permission to roam or ‘surf the net’ for new and other experts.
#5 – Admitted to my fellow writers, to ourselves, and to our viewers the exact nature of our marketing plans.
Formality and sharing my knowledge is appreciated but may have the viewer searching elsewhere for more entertaining information.
*Yet – I’ve learned that mixing the formality with conversational writing will keep my readers coming back. Showing flaws will portray realism. I share my true voice.
#6 – Were entirely ready to have our fans remove all the awful feelings of past rejections.
Reasons why I shut-down and suddenly go into ‘writer’s-block’:
1.) I focusing on the negative
2.) My expectations are not being met – Book sales are down
3.) I dwell on the disappointed outcome
*Yet – Using praise from my fans can bring me up and activate the muse. I can change my attitude and focus. No longer do I care about my book-sales; instead, I really care about my fans and the desire to support my fellow-writers.
#7 – Humbly asked viewers to keep coming back.
Spam is just wrong.
*Yet – Genuinely giving great content and showing that I need them work to my benefit.
#8 – Made a list of all promotional tactics we had used, and became willing to make improvements to them all.
Using the successful promotional techniques I used a year ago may not work today. Even yesterday’s tactics may not work anymore.
*Yet – To accept this society as a speed-changing entity will help change the focus off my faults or mishaps and more on the reasons for change.
#9 – Made direct updates to such marketing tactics, except when to do so would drive us to insanity.
Again, what worked yesterday, may not work today.
*Yet – I can prepare for change. I can be constantly searching out new methods. I work this daily education into my day plan.
#10 – Continued to take self-evaluation and when we were receiving less hits promptly acknowledged it.
I see rises and falls…ups and downs.
*Yet – I can prepare for the roller coaster by spreading my abilities or gifts. For example: During a fall on one of my blog post (according to the Google Analytics), I will then enter the social media sites and help a fellow writer with a marketing dilemma. I cannot expect myself to always rise on a high peak, so when the hits decrease, I have to plan for an alternative means of accomplishment.
#11 – Sought through inspirational experts to improve our marketing plan with our consumers as we understood them, hoping only for knowledge of their purchasing-buttons and the power to carry that out.
Having the author switch roles from an artist to business is quite a feat. Now a writer must be a marketer, a publicist, and quite often the distributor in order to sell books.
*Yet – As authors, we have accepted we have to wear many hats to perform the end-results…sales. The blessing is the Internet—the unbelievable amount of information and experts are now captured with a few clicks on a keyboard.
#12 – Having had remarkable ideas as the result of these resources, we tried to carry this knowledge to fellow-writers, and to practice these marketing tips in all our affairs.
The bulk of all the information on the Internet can be overwhelming.
*Yet – I do have the ability to scan. I’m literate—a gift to many in this world. I climb higher and sell more books by gathering together with others. Team work is the answer, and there are so many out in cyber-space willing to help.
